9 secrets to lift struggling readders

-    Read alouds

- literacy instruction

4. STRESS THE FUNDAMENTALS
-   Struggling readers require targeted specific instruction
-spend a few minutes assessing individual students' difficulties and develop activities to assist them

5. Send strategies home
-  Struggling readers often don't know how to integrate 'school reading' with the reading they encounter in real life

6. Let interests lead the way
- Introduce other formats, besides books eg comics, graphics. series books

7. Get Graohic
- graphic novels often appeal tp older struggling readers, making them a great way to build reading skills.

8. Build confidence
- To help students build confidence, set them up for small successes.  Contests may motivate some struggling readers.  Others respond well to rewards and incentives.

9. Develop effective routines
- Make reading a part of their daily lives.  Set up support systems at home.  Register at your local library.

Doctor Mark Robinson revealed the alarming statistic that as much as 100 girls under the age of 18, give birth every month. at the nation's hospital. 

MERIKENS - free black American settlers in Trinidad 1815-16.  They arrived on these lands on Aug. 20th  1816.
They arrived as refugees from the war of 1812 between America and Britain.  Merikens March is on Aug 20th.....
This celebration marks the anniversary of the Merikens arrival to South Trinidad where they formed the Company Villages which still exist today. Display at National Museum.

 " In May 2012, Cabinet decided to dedicate the former Public Library ( at the corner of Knox and Pembroke Streets) as the nation's major repository for the special collections of former prime ministers and presidents.  Towards that end, it is expected   that in fiscal year 2013. government   will allocate the funds necessary for the restoration and refurbishment of the buildong as a library and museum for the memorabilia of those leaders who served the nation."

Our lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church will soon be elevated as the Pro Cathedral for the archdiocese of Port of Spain come August 15, 2012.   This church is steeped in history as far back as 1849. The church celebrates 225 years of the early Catholic mission in Naparima which began in 1786.

CAMPUS LITERATURE WEEK   
Featuring UWI's writer-in-residence, Rabindranath Maharaj, award-winning author of eight books, incliding five novels.
His latest novel, he Amazing absorbing Boy, won both the Trillium Fiction Award an d the City of Toronto Book Award.
Maharaj was born in Trinidad and emigrated to Canada in the early 1990s, where he received numerous awards for  his writing, including the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Medal.
Maharaj received a NALIS lifetime Literary Award as part of the commemoration of Trinidad's 50th Independence anniversary.

Students at Holy Name, Convent, Point Fortin - Form 4 Class
As the students folowed the step by step process explained by the librarian, they complained that it was difficult to navigate and they mentioned that they preferred to do a google search.
However, some teachers mentioned it is a useful database.  At this school, EBSCHOHOST is used more by teachers who are pursuing their degree, rather than by students.
